Song In My Head

One of the more unique things about the legendary post-punk band The Fall is their willingness to do cover songs. They've released nearly 30 studio albums, and virtually every one includes a cover song. The one that's in my head today is "There's a Ghost in My House", originally done by Motown's R. Dean Taylor in 1966 and popular in Northern Soul clubs. Here's The Fall version from 1987, which peaked at #30 on the UK charts.

  1. Ok, I'm having a hard tiem with the term "legenday." Yes, the Fall have produced some 30+ studio albums, but does that make them legendary? if it were not for teh Harson Family love that goes out to them, I don't know if I would ever have thought twice about them. Do they really ranks as a seminal post-punk band? Curious to see you defend the mighty Mark E. Smith.

  2. You're crazy. They are absolutely legendary. Name another band from that era/genre that has had the longevity and the catalog of The Fall. You can't argue with 29 studio records. I can't think of another artist that has that level of creative output. Granted, they never were as big as some of the others, but they certainly have a cult following that extends far beyond me and my brother!!

  3. Still, I just don't get the all out love that you & Nev seem to shower on them. I find them very "ok."

As for a band that has the same longevity, look at Social Distortion. Still cranking out quality records. Yes, no one else I can name cranks out 29+ records, but isn't it quality over quantity? For Social D., look at 2007's "Far Behind" or even 2011's "Machine Gun Blues."

  4. You pointed to Social D as a band that's been going strong for almost as long. But what I've heard of their new record sonds like stuff they could have recorded back in 1992. Same chords and everything. Am I wrong? It's not that it's not good, it just that they're 30 years on and aping themselves -- I don't know that I see a whole lot of creativity there... but maybe I'm missing something.

  5. Just because the sound remains the same doesn't mean it's not good. "Start Me Up" By the Rolling Stoens came out almost 20 years after they first started recording. The sound is purley Stones. Does that make it or them a falling star at that point?

A band like Social D. is not going to re-invent themselves. Teh point of making quality music soem 30 years later is impressive.

The argument I had with you was over the term "legendary." I don't think the Fall or Socail D. are legenday. Just bands that contiune to crank out the kinds of music they do best.
