Davy Jones is dead at the age of 66. The Manchester native had an illustrative career, most notably as the lead singer of The Monkees, Despite auspicious beginnings -- they were essentially a theatrical response to the Beatles, with members who were all hired to look cute but not play their instruments -- they fought for and won creative control over the band. And they had the musical sense to work with some of the best songwriters of the day, like the Kingston Trio's John Stewart, who penned the great "Daydream Believer."
